Natural Stone Countertop Guide
GRANITE
HEAT RESISTANCE
Granite is one of the most heat-resistant natural stones available for countertops. It can handle high temperatures from hot cookware, but extreme or sudden heat may cause damage. Always use trivets or hot pads under pots, pans, and baking dishes to protect the surface.
SEALING
Granite has low absorption compared to other natural stones. A quality penetrating sealer should be applied to protect against stains while allowing the stone to breathe. Reapply the sealer every one to three years depending on usage. The installer will apply the first coat shortly after installation.
SEAMS
In most installations, seams are required and may be visible or slightly felt. The visibility depends on the color and pattern. Darker granites tend to hide seams better than lighter ones.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Sealed granite is easy to maintain. Clean daily with warm water and mild soap or a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid acidic or abrasive cleaners that can damage the sealer or etch the surface.
WHERE TO INSTALL
Granite is suitable for indoor kitchens, bathrooms, and vanities. It can also be used outdoors on horizontal surfaces like patios or BBQ counters in mild climates. It is not recommended for vertical outdoor cladding in freeze-thaw regions.
QUARTZ
COMPOSITION
Quartz countertops are engineered from approximately 90% natural quartz mixed with resins and pigments. This combination creates a non-porous, durable surface that resists scratches, stains, and bacteria.
COLOR RANGE
Quartz is available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, from solid tones to marble-like veining. Colors are consistent across slabs, making it easier to achieve a uniform look in large installations.
SURFACE FINISH
The manufacturing process results in a smooth, even surface with no natural pits or fissures. Quartz has a lower gloss level than polished granite but maintains a clean, modern appearance.
HEAT RESISTANCE
Quartz can withstand moderate heat but is more sensitive than natural stone. Direct contact with very hot items may cause discoloration or damage. Always use a trivet or hot pad.
SEALING
Quartz is non-porous and does not require sealing in most cases. Brushed or textured finishes may benefit from occasional sealing to maintain stain resistance.
SEAMS
Seams are needed in larger layouts and may be visible, especially in solid colors. Patterned designs help conceal seams better. Professional installation minimizes their appearance.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Clean quartz with mild soap and water or a non-abrasive cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasive pads. A soft cloth is sufficient for daily care.
WHERE TO INSTALL
Quartz is ideal for indoor kitchens, bathrooms, and commercial spaces. It is not recommended for outdoor use due to potential fading from UV exposure.
QUARTZITE
UNIQUE APPEARANCE
Quartzite is a natural metamorphic rock formed from sandstone under intense heat and pressure. Each slab has unique veining and color variations, making every installation one of a kind.
COLOR RANGE
Available in a broad spectrum from light whites and grays to warm golds and greens. Natural mineral deposits create subtle patterns that add depth and character.
CUSTOM FABRICATION
Quartzite is quarried in large blocks, then cut and finished to fit your project. It can be shaped for custom edges, sinks, and integrated features.
NATURAL ORIGIN
As a product of geological processes, quartzite offers timeless beauty that complements both modern and traditional designs.
DURABILITY
Quartzite is one of the hardest natural stones, rating high on the Mohs scale. It resists scratches and impact better than granite in most cases.
HEAT RESISTANCE
Quartzite handles high heat exceptionally well and is suitable for direct contact with hot cookware. Use trivets as a precaution to avoid thermal shock.
SEALING
Although very dense, quartzite has minor natural fissures that benefit from sealing. Apply a penetrating sealer every 12 to 18 months to maintain protection.
SEAMS
Seams may be visible in large installations. Darker colors and busy patterns help reduce their noticeability. Professional matching ensures clean joints.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Clean with mild soap and water or a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid acidic products that can etch the surface. Wipe spills promptly, especially oils and wine.
WHERE TO INSTALL
Perfect for high-traffic kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor kitchens with proper sealing. Suitable for both residential and commercial applications.
MARBLE
UNIQUE APPEARANCE
Marble is a metamorphic stone formed from limestone under heat and pressure. Its distinctive veining and soft tones make each slab visually distinct.
COLOR RANGE
Most known for white and light gray backgrounds, marble also comes in creams, beiges, and deeper tones with bold or subtle veining patterns.
CUSTOM FABRICATION
Marble is cut from quarry blocks and polished or honed to specification. It supports intricate edge profiles and custom inlays.
NATURAL ORIGIN
Marble has been used in architecture for centuries, offering classic elegance that fits traditional and contemporary homes.
DURABILITY
Marble is durable but softer than granite or quartzite. It resists cracking but is prone to etching from acids and scratching in high-use areas.
HEAT RESISTANCE
Marble tolerates heat well but can be damaged by extreme temperatures. Use trivets under hot items to prevent surface marks.
SEALING
Marble is porous and requires sealing every 6 to 12 months to prevent staining. Use a high-quality impregnating sealer and test absorption regularly.
SEAMS
Seams are common in larger tops and may be visible, especially in lighter colors. Skilled fabricators minimize their appearance with tight joints.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Clean with a soft cloth and pH-neutral cleaner. Blot spills immediately to avoid etching. Avoid acidic or abrasive products. Use coasters under glasses.
WHERE TO INSTALL
Best for low-traffic bathrooms, fireplace surrounds, and accent walls. Suitable for light-use kitchens if maintenance is accepted. Not ideal for heavy outdoor exposure.
